Trevor Something Does Not Exist (2014) Review

Synthwave

2014

The neon-soaked anime-style cover art evokes visions of speeding away from a nighttime shootout in a '84 Ferrari Testarossa, and TSDNE delivers just that. A shameless tribute to the glory days of ‘80s synthpop, R&B and italo-disco, this is more of a mixtape than an original release considering the heavy use of samples from Depeche Mode, New Order and the Human League

That being said, originals like “Summer Love” and “Searching” are fantastic and hold their own alongside covers like “Enjoy the Silence”. The “Blue Monday”/“Don’t You Want me” sample mashup of “Come Back Down” is fantastic.

Modern artists are sample to great effect as well; Com Truise on “Mechanical Love” and Grimes on “Sega Genesis”.
